Once upon a time, slipping our feet into a pair of shoes before we left the house used to be one of our favourite morning rituals. The cherry on top of an outfit, would it be a comfy trainer, preppy loafer or impractical but aesthetically pleasing heel kinda day? Thanks to lockdown, along with our handbags and any item of clothing that doesn’t fall into the loungewear category, our beloved shoes now sit neglected in our wardrobes, gathering dust as we stare at them longingly, reminiscing about good times gone by the way we do with our camera reel.
Of course, we haven’t gone completely feral and shunned footwear altogether: weekend walks; trips to the supermarket and daily exercise call for a few pairs of boots, trainers and flats on rotation. Now, it’s time to add “house shoes” to that line-up. Slides, clogs, mules – house shoes are, essentially, whatever you want them to be. House shoes are the shoe we didn’t know we really needed until we stopped really leaving the house. It makes sense if you think about it. Dirty-soled outdoor shoes adding to the cleaning you already CBA to do? No thanks. Working from your lounge/bed/dining room in a pair of “real” shoes just feels weird, your slipper-slippers aren’t exactly going to make you feel uber-productive and going barefoot constantly is either freezing or downright uncomfortable. Since most house shoes have a durable sole that’s somewhere in between a slipper and an actual shoe, they’re also perfect for those unseasonable but gloriously sunny mornings, letting you take your morning caffeine fix into the garden to get a bonus Vitamin D hit. Or, slightly less idyllic, chucking the rubbish out approximately 20 seconds before the bin men arrive.
Sold? From sliders and cosy socks to faux-fur lined clogs, we’ve rounded up the house shoes that are definitely worth treating your feet to right now.
