On a platform that can sometimes be, well… slightly overwhelming, we’ve found that some of our recent most-appreciated new follows have been for educational Instagram accounts. The kind that add an element of learning or knowledge to our daily (or half hourly) social media scrolls.
So whether you’re in the middle of a complete Instagram follow list refresh and want some new accounts to add to the mix, or there’s a certain subject you’re hoping to learn more about – here’s our combined list of fave specialist accounts to follow right now…
Important Global Issues
Admittedly, with so much information being thrown at us from every angle (Whatsapp chats, emails, news outlets, the hundreds of Insta accounts we follow), it can sometimes be hard to keep on top of exactly what important issues are going on in the world. @shityoushouldcareabout keeps it simple and short and easy to digest – it informs you without bombarding, and often has a playful way of doing it. The account covers everything from increases in Asian hate crime and Meghan Markle’s experience of racism to mental health, abortion and LGBTQIA+ rights.
This account is absolutely bloody wonderful in helping you navigate the waters of gentle parenting (if that’s the route you choose to go down with your kid). It offers common scenarios and ways to handle them, advice, and comfort when it feels like you’ve fucked up by losing the plot and shouting at your kid because hashtag that lockdown life. It’s run by Jess, a Canadian therapist (who’s also a mum to two young kids), and has a heavy focus on the toddler years and understanding tantrums and ‘bad’ behaviour and how to better communicate with your child. It’s non-judgemental and a great source of information.
We’re not entirely sure we’d have made it through the turbulent shit show that was the global pandemic and the various lockdown restrictions if it wasn’t for the team behind Simple Politics. Their no-bullshit, easy-to-read, visual approach to explaining politics has kept us clued up during a difficult time – and they were also incredibly helpful to follow during the last general election too. A must follow as part of the whole ‘knowledge is power’ mantra.
In a world that is still somehow dominated by male power, The Female Lead allows you to constantly be reminded of the strength, intelligence and general bad ass-ness of women every single time you head for an Instagram scroll. Not only does it acknowledge the success stories of so many little-known female role models, but it shines a light on racism and discrimination against disabled women and the LGBTQIA+ community. It will make you feel proud to be a woman and educates you at the same time.
A surgical doctor in the NHS with a book out this spring (it’s called Food Isn’t Medicine and it’s available to pre-order), Josh fights weight stigma and diet culture by using his medical knowledge to break down the reality behind so many food, wellbeing and dieting myths. His no-nonsense approach is a great starting point for anyone looking to educate themselves on why diets don’t work, whilst on their personal journey to weight self-acceptance.
There’s plenty of great anti-racism resources available on Instagram and one of our most-shared is Everyday Racism because they continually post easy-to-digest material that can be applied to everyday life. It’s easy to understand and its topical. The account is run by UK-based duo Natalie and Naomi and their Instagram post slides are incredibly informative and helpful to anyone looking to better themselves as an ally.
Pregnancy and Labour
An absolute treasure trove of support and guidance for anyone currently pregnant, The Positive Birth Company account feels like a comforting online community that will help you better understand your choices and your power throughout pregnancy and birth. It was created by Siobhan Miller, an accredited hypnobirthing teacher, and aims to empower pregnant women – there’s also a hypnobirthing course and book to continue the education offline.
Whilst the rest of our fave educational accounts are rather wordy, the @natgeo account educates, inspires and informs via photography. It regularly uploads images to its whopping 155 MILLION followers, which illustrate stories from around the globe. It is a solid reminder of just how big our world is, and how different and yet alike the lives we lead are. It sheds light on important issues happening miles from home with its descriptive captions to go alongside some rather breathtaking imagery.
Run by Illiyan, a hypnobirthing teacher from Norwich, Mixing Up Motherhood is all about the full of experience of parenting – from the early stages of pregnancy (miscarriage included), to pregnancy and labour, and on to the realities of having kids. It’s an educational account but Illy also shares snippets of her personal life which makes for a great, balanced account that’ll inform, empower and make you feel less alone.
