Temperatures above 10 degrees. Clear blue skies. Brilliant sunshine…oh, trench coat weather, how we’ve missed you.
We’ve heard the phrase “wardrobe staple” bandied about so much over the years that it makes us eye-roll, but, credit where credit is due, the trench really is one. Classic? Tick. Versatile? Tick. Major “oh this old thing? I just threw it on” effortless chic vibes? Yep, tick. A bit like knitwear, ankle boots and umbrellas, if you live in England, owning a trench coat is pretty much a pre-requisite. Unpredictable weather, we see you.

The best thing about a trench coat is that you don’t have to spend a fortune for it to look amazing. We’ve seen charity shop St Michael styles that look as good as a four-figure Burberry number, and this spring, it’s a certain high street version that’s going viral.

Looking a lot more spendy than it’s £100 price tag, River Island Studio’s chic trench has already been snapped up by Insta faves @indiamoon, @wear.juti.eats, @tinaprokas and @emmarosestyle, and we can see why. Part of their premium Studio collection of elevated wardrobe basics, it’s the perfect shade of beige with all the signature trench details, but that double-layer lapel, chic curved storm flaps and tie sleeves take it to the next level. As for how to wear it, the options are endless, but we’re thinking loungewear now – it looks divine with that Studio lilac hoodie – then over a cute ‘lil spring dress once we have a reason not to wear elasticated waists every day. Consider this your heads up: it’s selling quicker than Aldi’s brioche hot cross buns.
