We don’t know if you’ve noticed, but John Lewis has really upped its fashion game lately. From Baukjen and Girlfriend Collective to Albaray, some very cool (and sustainable) names have joined the department store’s womenswear brand roster and now it’s adding Kemi Telford to that covetable list.
You’ve no doubt seen a Kemi Telford frock brightening up your Instagram feed – the small British brand counts @erica_davies, @wearsmymoney and @aminatou among its legion of fans. Founded by designer Yvonne Modupe Telford in 2017, bold, joyful dresses are Kemi Telford’s signature style, and, whilst many high street big names haven’t been able to survive the pandemic, this indie label has positively thrived.
Blue Patterned Shirt Dress, £195, Kemi Telford for John Lewis
From floral to gingham, Kemi Telford’s trademark prints are made from deadstock and limited edition fabrics, making for designs that feel good, look good and do good. While the patterns may be statement, the silhouettes are timeless and flattering – think classic shirt or smock dresses and midi skirts – and the John Lewis collection, launching on April 21st, is no exception.
So, pick your favourite from the collection (we’ve got our eye on that lilac gingham number, £170) and set a phone reminder for April 21st – your post-lockdown wardrobe deserves some Kemi Telford in it.
Prices are on the spendier side – around £165 for a dress and £120 for a skirt – but these are forever pieces, crafted to last and designed to be loved and cherished for decades. For inspiration on how to wear yours, look no further than Telford herself. She models every piece on her website and the brand’s Instagram feed is full of KT pieces styled with everything from Adidas superstars to classic Birkenstocks. It’s also a masterclass in print clashing, which Telford is an absolute pro at.
