To the average person 18 seasons of the same TV show might seem a bit excessive (especially when each season has over 20 hour-long episodes), but to a Grey’s Anatomy fan the news that it’s just been renewed for its 18th season is absolutely bloody brilliant. The obsession isn’t over just yet!
ABC yesterday confirmed that they had renewed the medical drama for its 18th season, and had also renewed Station 19 – which often features crossover episodes with Grey’s Anatomy – for a fifth season.
The new season will likely air in the U.S. later this year and in the UK early next year, and has been confirmed as starring Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber).
There had been questions over whether the show – which is one of the most-watched TV dramas in the world – would continue, as many of the lead actors had contracts which ended at the close of the 17th series. ABC confirmed that these had been renewed for at least one more season.
Krista Vernoff, who is the executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy, also added fuel to the fire when she told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m planning a season and a finale that could function as either a season finale or a series finale. I’m planning for both contingencies and it’s hard and it’s not ideal. It’s not where I wish we were.”
Season 17 is currently airing on Sky Atlantic and is set in the pandemic which makes for hardcore viewing. You can watch seasons 1-16 either on Amazon Prime or on the STAR section of Disney+.
We look forward to seeing what else Seattle’s medical drama has in-store for us…
