Tonight marks the penultimate episode of Sky Atlantic’s hit crime drama Mare of Easttown. It’s been one of those new TV shows which has been cropping up over and over again, both via Instagram stories and in our own Whatsapp groups. But what is it? And, well… is it actually worth a watch?
First off, the crime series stars Kate Winslet as the lead character. She plays a detective who lives in Pennsylvania and is grappling with her own demons whilst working on the unsolved case of a local missing woman. She stars alongside Evan Peters (of American Horror Story fame) who, thanks to his short hair and crisp look, is almost unrecognisable.
There’s seven episodes in the series, all at around 57-minutes long (or an hour and a quarter if you’re watching live with adverts). The show has been airing every Monday night on Sky Witness between 9pm and 10.15pm, and is also available for NOW TV viewers to watch. Tonight’s episode will be the 6th in the series, with the final airing on the 31st May.
Each episode has been fairly slow going (you will catch yourself accidentally flicking through your social media apps), until the final 10-15 minutes when it ramps up so much you barely remember to breathe or blink. It has a small town feel with plenty of minor characters that feel suspicious right from the start – a bit like an American take on something like Broadchurch or The Missing. It’s a great addictive bit of viewing for any fellow armchair detectives.
And, whilst Kate Winslet’s accent took a bit of getting used to, we’ll be absolutely watching it right til the very end. There’s no news yet as to whether there will be a second season, but we’ll keep you updated if and when there’s more news…
