Ah yes, it’s that glorious time of year again – a time for barbecues and beach trips, and of course peonies. Big, beautiful, blousy flowers that are, of course, the unofficial flower of Instagram. They have a short bloom window – usually between May and July – which makes them feel a bit like a rare Pokemon to catch, so we thought we’d share where you can snap some up, whatever your budget.
You’ll most likely find them in pink – either soft blush or hot fuchsia – but the also come in white and a deep burgundy too!
Demand for peonies has surged by almost 100% in the past three years, and for good reason, they’re bloody gorgeous.
Here’s where you can snap some up…
Super affordable and easy to pick up whilst grabbing nappies, SpecialBuys or that pretzel chocolate, Aldi’s peony offering is a no-fuss one. They currently have two options: pay £4.99 for a small bouquet of five stems, or pay £6.99 for a slightly large bunch. Both come wrapped in plastic and there’s mixed reviews over how long they last, but equally, they don’t break the bank.
BLOOM & WILD
We bloody love Bloom & Wild as a special treat for ourselves or our favourite people, and they always seem to have peonies available right at the start of the season (worth remembering for next year). Currently they have a couple of options which start at £36 – all their bouquets come in cardboard boxes which fit through your letterbox. There isn’t a peony-only bouquet, but rather they’re mixed in with blooms like roses, sweetpeas and carnations for a real wild flower feel. Shop here.
I’ve picked up a lot of Tesco peonies over the year – they’re not always in store so it’s a case of buying them when you see them because they tend to sell out quickly (I’ve also managed to buy them from the reduced bin too, so worth a snoop). They cost £6 (which I think gives you five stems) and usually come in a pink shade.
YOUR LOCAL FLORIST
Of course, nowhere’s better than your good ol’ local florist. You will likely pay a premium for them but chances are they’ll be better quality, look prettier, and last for longer. Obviously this differs between florists and not all of them will have them in so it’s worth calling ahead, or following them on social media for updates. The benefits of buying from your local florist means you’ll be able to buy as many as you like, even if that’s just one or two!
Waitrose have a variety of different peony options depending on how much you want to spend. Their simple, budget bunch sell at £8, whilst they also do a large bouquet which is combined with roses for £20. Both of those are available in Waitrose stores, but you can also order peonies via their flower delivery service here.
For the real fancy pants peonies that look wildly decadent and luxurious and last FOREVER* (*approximate), look no further than FLOWRBX. Prices start from £55 for 10 stems and you can choose from a selection of different colours and variations, including Royal Windsor, Framboise and Boudoir. Heaven! Shop here.
They’ve also been spotted in Morrison’s and Co-op and are sometimes (although rarely) spied in Sainsbury’s too!
