It’s been one of the most hotly anticipated new seasons of a Netflix show, and finally we have a date for when Sex Education will return to our screens. Wait for it, wait for it – September 17th 2021.
Rumours were flying around earlier this year around January time that season three of the British comedy-drama was imminent, but it turned out to be a hoax as the show was still in filming at the time.
Netflix announced the news with the real air date earlier today via the Sex Education official Instagram account. They shared an on-set photo of Emma Mackey, who plays Maeve Wiley, dressed in school uniform with the caption: “Change is coming. Sex Education returns September 17 | captured on set by Tanya Reynolds.”
They also shared images of other members of the cast including Sami Outalbali who plays Rahim, Asa Butterfield who plays Otis, and Trish Allison who plays Ola.
The show, for those who have yet to get themselves hooked, follows a group of teenage school mates through their sixth form years. So far storylines have covered everything from pregnancy and STDs to queer identity and masturbation. It’s written by Laurie Nunn, and part of the show’s allure is the blurring of lines between decades – there’s nods to the eighties and nighties, whilst still feeling very much like it’s set in the current day.
Season two of Sex Education aired back in January 2020 (all episodes arrived at once, so it’s likely to be the same this time around) and left lots of dramatic unanswered questions – most notably around Maeve and Otis. We can’t wait to see what season three has in-store for us, let the three month countdown begin…
