It seems like there’s a new Instagram update every single day – usually to fix bugs we hadn’t even noticed, and so we completely missed the news flash that the app now lets you hide how many likes your image has received. Which, let’s face it, is set to be a gamechanger when it comes to the joy-thief that is comparison.
You might have already noticed the change whilst you’ve been scrolling over the past few weeks. More and more larger accounts, including plenty of your favourite influencers, have adopted the new format which means that likes on a new post will simply show as ‘Liked by <insert name of an account who has liked the image> and others’ instead of a number.
You can still find out how many people have liked your image by checking the analytics, but no-one else will be able to see.
So, how do you join the club? Well, you can make the switch on both new and existing posts. With existing posts you simply click on the image you want to hide your likes on, tap the three small dots in the right hand corner and choose ‘Hide Like Count’.
For new posts you’re able to switch off the like count under ‘Advanced Settings’ which you’ll find on the same page you write your caption on (you’ll need to scroll right down to the bottom to find it – the fonts smaller too, so it’s easy to miss).
There’s also now an option to completely hide everyone you follow’s like count, which is a great tool if you find social media plays havoc with your mental health. Just click into ‘Settings’ which you’ll find on your profile page by clicking the three horizontal lines in the top right corner. Click into ‘Privacy’ and then ‘Posts’ and you’ll see an option to ‘Hide like and view counts’.
