Hands up who used to be obsessed with Claire’s Accessories infamous lucky dip bags? Costing just £2 and crammed full with all the glittery tat you never needed, they were the ultimate Saturday shopping purchase. But now there’s a fancy grown-up version that’s going to shoot to the top of your wishlist – enter the £5 leftover food ‘magic’ bag by Waitrose.
Each bag will include food that would otherwise be thrown out and is close to going out of date, and the selection of goods within each bag would usually cost around £15.
The bags will only be sold at Little Waitrose stores situated on Shell Select forecourts and Waitrose shops located within Welcome Break motorway stations and will be advertised through the Too Good To Go app.
They won’t be sold at larger Waitrose stores because the excess food at the end of each day is donated to FareShare, a food distribution charity.
A spokesperson for the supermarket said: “We are expecting to save a huge amount of food that would otherwise be thrown away. People tell us they enjoy the surprise element of opening the bag and discovering what’s inside, the good value they are getting, and knowing they are saving good food from going to waste”.
The bags are available now, and there are 27 Welcome Break motorway service stations and 57 Little Waitrose at Shell Select that are participating.
We know what our random-but-much-needed buy of the week is going to be…
