There’s nothing that makes you feel less like you’ve got sexy, swishy hair than having to itch it every two minutes because hello your scalp feels like it *might* be on fire.
And, unless you’re suffering from the dreaded lice infestation, the chances are that your itchy and irritated scalp is caused by either dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, neither of which sound exactly glamorous. They can be caused be an incredibly long list of things: product build up, an oily scalp, hormone changes, stress, or even a switch in seasons.
I’ve been suffering with an itchy scalp since I became addicted to dry shampoo (ahem, also around the same time I became a parent), and whilst I could just wean myself off it, I’m too attached to how good it makes me feel about myself within about seven seconds.
I’ve tried multiple scalp scrubs and all have felt like they’re doing something on application, but none of them have been able to stop me having to publicly drag my nails in my hair.
Anyway, as usual, I turned to the ever-clever audience on Instagram to ask for your suggestions on what actually works. The tried and tested things that brought relief to your own scalps. So, without further ado, these were the products recommended in their hundreds…
The Body Shop Ginger Shampoo
Without a shadow of a doubt, this was the most loved shampoo for itchy heads with you lot. The Body Shop’s Anti Dandruff Shampoo costs £7.50 for a 250ml bottle, or if you just want to test it before committing, you can pick up a travel size bottle for just £2. Rather excellent. There’s also a serum and conditioner in the same range, and all products are completely vegan and cruelty free.
Philip Kingsley Flaky/Itchy Scalp
A pricier, but also incredibly well-rated option is Philip Kingsley’s specialist shampoo. It’ll set you back £12.50 for 75ml or £25.50 for 250ml. Those who love it say it’s the only product that’s ever truly worked for them and once they tried it there was absolutely no going back.
Neutrogena T Gel Shampoo
And the best of the budget itchy scalp shampoos was good ol’ T/Gel by Neutrogena, which you can snap up in most supermarkets and Boots stores. There’s plenty of variations available, but the classic ‘Therapeutic Shampoo’ will set you back £3.74 for 125ml in Boots right now as there’s 25% off. It’s best used 2-3 times a week to treat scalp conditions.
