Just as Hema was quickly becoming one of our go-tos for budget kids toys, cute stocking fillers, and surprising homeware finds, the Dutch brand have decided to withdraw completely from the UK market – closing down all eight stores and stopping trading on their website. Sob.
The brand first landed in the UK back in 2014 but according to the CEO they were unable to “build a solid position” within the market.
He added: “We are now evaluating our entire country portfolio with the aim of being able to focus on a limited number of countries, which will allow us to better exploit growth opportunities in the future. This is better for Hema, its employees and its customers in the long term.”
Admittedly, we’re gutted. But for anyone new to the brand, the concept was very similar to Tiger and IKEA, but the website was much easier to shop from, with free delivery for all orders under £20.
The UK stores which can be found in London and Birmingham have all already closed or are in the process of closing.
Looks like we’ll have to head oversees to get our next Hema fix which may be a little while yet…
