Pregnancy, breastfeeding, mental health, physical health – there are lots of reasons to stop – or at least cut back on – alcohol.
Whether you’re teetotal, trying out mindful drinking (reducing your alcohol intake so you become aware of why and how much you drink) or just can’t hack a hangover anymore (we hear ya) the alcohol-free or low-alcohol options available are more plentiful than ever.
With four babies (and two IVF cycles for one of us) under our belts, we’ve road-tested our fair share of alcohol-free bevs and, from beer to gin, we’ve rounded up our faves below. All of the taste, non of the hangxiety – what’s not to love?
Heineken 0.0% Alcohol-Free Beer
A quick poll of our alcohol-free pals (including a couple of beer-loving blokes) revealed Heineken 0.0% to be the most popular non-alcoholic lager and we concur. It’s light, fresh and best served ice-cold. Lucky Saint 0.5% lager also deserves a mention for being a strong contender for the real thing.
The best non-alcoholic gin out there (in our opinion) Ceder’s was created by husband and wife team Craig And Maria after discovering a valley full of botanicals in the Cederberg Mountains of the Western Cape, South Africa. We love the Classic, infused with juniper, coriander and rooibos, but the Pink Rose is said to be bloody delicious too.
Non-alcoholic fizz is a hard one – most we’ve tried are so sweet you feel like your teeth are going to fall out after one glass. Nosecco is the exception to the rule and much closer to the OG in taste. A great one for special occasions. Or just, y’know, Friday night. It’s vegan too.
With a bright orange hue and slightly bitter taste, this non-alcoholic Italian aperitif makes the perfect stand-in for an Aperol Spritz or Negroni. The vintage-style bottles are teeny, so get more bang for your buck by making a Crodino spritz with 3 parts orange juice, 2 parts Crodino, 1 part soda or tonic water, ice cubes and a slice of orange cube.
We’d always go for a non-alcoholic red over white or rose, which tend to be sickeningly sweet. While it won’t pass for your favourite Malbec, Eisberg’s 0% Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot is a perfectly drinkable alternative that’s great for dinner parties.
Koppaberg Non-Alcoholic Cider
The non-alcoholic Koppaberg doesn’t taste wildly different from its alcoholic counterpart – fruity, sweet and utterly refreshing when served with ice on a hot day. It’s perfect for barbecues, lazy summer evenings in the garden with a book, or drinking at the beach and pretending you’re somewhere far more exotic.
We’re suckers for pretty packaging and a quirky name, so we’ll definitely be packing Punchy’s chic tinnies for our next park picnic. Holiday Romance is a mix of peach, ginger and chai, First Dip combines cucumber, yuzu and rosemary while Golden Hour fuses blood orange, bitters and cardamom – perfect if you’ve OD’d on Diet Coke. Plastic-free, all-natural, vegan and low-sugar – there’s a lot to love about this brand.
