The revelation that Footballers Wives is finally coming back on our screens is the kind of nostalgic TV news we are living for right now. Subscription service BritBox has announced it will air all five seasons of the iconic noughties series – plus two seasons of spin-off show Extra Time – from Thursday 26th August.
Set in the era of the WAG, the cult show ran from 2002-2006 and centered around the drama-filled lives of the wives and girlfriends of the fictional Earls Park Football Club players. Often described as one of the most outrageous shows on TV, Footballers Wives’ wild storylines included perma-tanned, chain-smoking Tanya Turner’s baby being smothered by a fellow WAG’s dog and Tanya (yes, her again) bumping off her husband Frank by – wait for it – shagging him to death.
If you come for the ridiculous storylines, you’ll stay for the 00s style. Halter-tops, hipster flares and asymmetric hems will make you feel like you’re fifteen again, sashaying out of Jane Norman swinging a logo-ed plastic (shudder) bag and feeling like the coolest fucking girl on earth. The beauty is a whole mood too, from Tanya’s pencil-thin brows to Chardonnay Lane-Pascoe’s poker-straight hair.
With other binge-worthy shows on BritBox including Broadchurch, First Dates, Marcella and Love Island, we’d say it’s £5.99 a month well spent.
