It’s been a shocker of a summer hasn’t it? Our sundresses have barely seen the light of day let alone actual sunshine, and our umbrellas have been getting more action than our sunglasses. Now it’s nearly September (yep, we’re not sure how that happened either) and we’re thinking it’s time to give up the ghost.
September always has that back-to-school vibe about it. Right around now you’d have your annual shopping trip into town to get a pair of Kickers or an Umbro backpack – and a Happy Meal, obvs – ready for the first day back. What a time to be alive.
The days of morning registration may be long gone, but every September we get the urge to do some back-to-school shopping, stocking up on transitional pieces that work as well on unexpectedly sunny days as they do in October. From midi dresses to cosy cardigans, here are the ones on our wish lists right now…
Hannah: I’m obsessed with the buttery blush pink leather of this beauty – a bit of an investment for sure, but one that will instantly liven up everything from beige trench coats to cream knitwear. £135, COS.
Gemma: I lived in a pair of black cord dungarees during both of my pregnancies, and have been looking for a non-maternity pair to fill the void. The search is over thanks to sustainable label Baukjen. They’ll look great with that cardi too. £149, Baukjen.
Hannah: You can’t beat a good cardigan to wear with a white tee and a midi skirt, and this cute red style is an absolute bargain. £14, George at ASDA.
Gemma: The square neck, the puff sleeves, the leopard print: what more could you want from an autumn dress? £59, Sosandar.
Hannah: September is the unofficial month of the casual jumpsuit teamed with trainers and a biker jacket. I love this bright style that’ll look just as great for summer 2022. £39, Simply Be.
Gemma: Dare I say it, this cosy cover up made from recycled polyester has actually got me excited about cooler autumn days. £60, Monki.
Hannah: It’s probably too early to start thinking about the festive party season but I bloody adore a sequin skirt and this one is hella beautiful. £71.20, Warehouse.
Gemma: My kinda Canadian tuxedo. Will look great with white denim too. £65, & Other Stories.
Hannah: Gingham dresses have been one of my fave trends so far this year, and this khaki style is perfect for sashaying from summer to autumn in. £39, Principles (coming soon).
Hannah: Another day, another great floaty dress that’ll work with everything from Teva sandals and Birkenstocks, to Converse and tan leather boots. £24.99, H&M and H&M+.
Gemma: Hi, my name is Gemma and I am a Birkenstock addict. I’ve been lusting after the brand’s shearling-lined pair for ages, and I know I’ll wear them forever. Just add chunky socks for extra cosiness come winter. £115, Birkenstock.
Hannah: An excellent slighty-over-the-top shirt to wear tucked into cream jeans (on kid-free days, obvs). £89, Whistles.
Gemma: As far as I’m concerned, you can never go wrong with a printed midi. An oversized collar is just the cherry on top. £45, Nobody’s Child at Marks & Spencer.
Hannah: I picture this with a leopard midi skirt and black heeled ankle boots. Pumpkin Spiced Latte optional. £55, Y.A.S.
Gemma: Hoping this Breton knit will give me some cool French gal vibes. It comes in four colours, and is selling fast. £69, Arket.
Hannah: I love the combo of colours in the floral number. I would style with just a slouchy white t-shirt and gold jewellery for the tail-end of summer. £29.99, Mango.
Gemma: Adore the hand-painted floral print, adore the fact it’s 100% Lenzing EcoVero™, made from certified renewable wood sources. The manufacturing process of this eco-friendly fabric generates up to 50% lower emissions and water impact compared to Viscose. £99, Thought.
Hannah: I mean what’s better for disguising my rather abstract post-baby hair re-growth than a boujee as fuck silky headband? £17, & Other Stories.
Hannah: Mustard is such a bangin’ autumnal shade and I love the shape of this simple midi frock from Debenhams. £45, Principles (coming soon).
Gemma: Cult sustainable dress label Kemi Telford now does sweatshirts and hoodies – perfect for upgrading your loungewear. £70, Kemi Telford.
Hannah: This oversized tote bag not only looks super cute but is perfect for throwing in your gym kit, work stuff, baby bits or just for taking out for a spin to Tesco Express. £19.99, Mango.
Gemma: Tees, sweatshirts, trainers, boots – silky midi skirts are way more versatile than you think. And can we just take a minute for the elasticated waist? £65, Hush.
Hannah: For me, the perfect black boot has to be slightly chunky, have a heel and come slightly up your shin. These beauties tick all those boxes. £69.99, Mango.
Gemma: The perfect piece for when your jeans and tee just need a little somethin’. £39.99, H&M.
Hannah: There’s lilac and there’s flowers, that pretty much sells it right? £47.20, Warehouse.
Gemma: No-one does a comfy flat quite like M&S – this leather pair look way more spendy than they are. £35, M&S.
Hannah: The perfect long-sleeved striped tee. It’s got a round neck, is pure cotton and comes in under a tenner. £8.50, M&S.
Gemma: Liberty’s Print With Purpose collection isn’t just beautiful, its created using recycled polyester yarn spun from discarded clothing and industrial waste. The ultimate fee-ood treat. £145, Liberty.
Hannah: An excellent bargain dupe for much pricier styles, these clogs will instantly become your house shoes that regularly make their way to nursery/takeaway/chocolate pick-up. £12.50, George at Asda.
