Renting clothes has become the hot new fashion spin of 2021 – why pay three figures for a fancy wedding guest frock you’ll wear once when you can borrow one off a cool girl you follow on Instagram, eh? But we’ve just learned that it’s not just wardrobe contents making their mark on the rental market because thanks to John Lewis, you can now rent furniture too. Ooh!
The department store first trialed the idea last year and it was such a success (all items on loan within 48 hours) that this summer they decided to extend their offering to include over 200 of their most popular items – including that rattan bed frame.
You can rent via Fat Llama – simply enter your postcode and find out what John Lewis can offer you. Prices start at around £15 a month for a desk, and go up to around £75 for a luxe corner sofa. Ideal if you’re renting somewhere as a stop-gap or have just moved house and aren’t quite ready for the commitment of buying and all rented items have a minimum 12-month term.
John Vary, Partner & Futurologist at the John Lewis Partnership said: “We’re seeing a real shift in consumer behaviour towards usership rather than ownership. The pandemic has turbo-charged this with an almost back-to-the-future move towards sharing, reusing or trading within communities or groups – renting a dress or sofa is the modern day equivalent of borrowing sugar from next door.”
