The jolly midweek news we all needed has arrived: Idris Elba with reprise his role as DCI Luther for a crime film with no other than Netflix. Woah. Huge. Just huge.
There have been five wildly gripping series of the London-based drama over the past decade, and all up to this point have aired on BBC One. The last season – back in 2019 – was so popular that it was watched by nearly 10 million households.
There’s been talk and rumours about a potential film in the saga for a little while now, but today streaming service Netflix dropped the whopper announcement via their social channels.
They said: “LUTHER NEWS. Idris Elba will reprise his iconic role — joined by Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis — in a new feature film written by series creator Neil Cross.”
There’s no news yet as to when it will be available to watch but we’re bloody excited, especially as it will be written by the same guy who’s worked on every single episode to date.
Neil Cross said: “What we’ve been able to do [with the movie] – having delivered every episode of Luther on budgets which are comically small – is to have a wider canvas and a bigger budget to tell the kind of stories that we’ve always wanted to be able to tell. And we’ve really been given the opportunity – while staying entirely true”.
We. Cannot. Wait.
