We’ve seen the Coca Cola ad and tuned into Heart Xmas: the festive season is officially here. Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper day is just around the corner (10th December) and, while it’s a brilliant fund-raising initiative, studies show that buying novelty jumpers en masse is fuelling the planet’s plastic pollution problem. According to an article published by The Guardian in 2019, 12 million jumpers were set to be purchased that year, despite 65 million already sitting unworn and unloved in wardrobes across the UK. The article cites research by the environmental charity Hubbub, which found that two out of five Christmas jumpers are only worn once over the festive period.
Of course, the most sustainable Christmas jumper is a secondhand one, but swerving novelty reindeers and light-up baubles in favour of more, ahem, stylish knits you’ll want to wear long after the Christmas tree has been taken down is another way to get into the festive spirit. Think Fair Isle and cable knit numbers (if Sex Education’s Miss Sands would wear it, you’re on the right track), punchy slogans or a little bit of sparkle. High street, independent brand or vintage, we hope you’ll find a jumper for December (and beyond) in our round-up…
