You know what the future looks like? It looks like entering a supermarket, filling your basket with delicious food items, transferring them to your canvas tote bag and leaving the shop without queuing for a checkout or a self-service checkout. And that’s exactly what Aldi’s new store looks like – in-store cameras track which items you pick up and leave the shop with and then you’re charged electronically once you leave the premises.
Brilliant or slightly terrifying? We think a bit of both. The new Aldi Shop&Go opened this week in Greenwich. It’s the first for the budget supermarket, although Amazon and Tesco have both trialed similar things in the past.
It is all processed via the Aldi Shop&Go app, including your age if you want to buy age-restricted products like alcohol. You enter your personal details on the app and fancy pants facial age estimation technology does the rest.
The CEO of Aldi said: “Today is the culmination of months of work, not least from the team here in Greenwich and I’m looking forward to seeing how customers react to our trial. This store utilises the very latest in retail technology offering Aldi’s award-winning products and unbeatable prices to customers in a new and innovative way. The team are really excited about seeing customers come in and experience Aldi Shop&Go.’
It has to be said that zero checkouts are going to make it so much bloody easier to do a food shop with the kids…
We’ll sit and patiently wait for the next Aldi Shop&Go to open near us…
