If you’re still singing those damn addictive lyrics to ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno‘ inside your head at least 17 times a day then listen up because there’s a new Pixar film launching on Disney+ tomorrow (11th March) that you’ll want to get a head’s up on.
Turning Red has completely skipped cinema status and gone straight to Disney+ so you might have missed any potential build-up – until now, that is. The film follows the life of 13-year-old Mei Lee, a Chinese-Canadian teenager who turns into a red panda whenever she freaks out. Y’know classic Pixar kinda stuff.
The film is set to be brilliant for a plethora of reasons, starting with the fact it’s the first Pixar film to star an Asian female in the lead role. And, not only that, it’s the first ever Pixar film to be directed by an Asian woman (Domee Shi, who previously won an Oscar for her film Bao), and to have a female-led leadership team, from the writers to the producers.
And, if that wasn’t quite enough for you, it also has a mega-star cast including Killing Eve‘s Sandra Oh and Daredevil’s Wai Ching Ho.
What about the plot? We hear ya. Well, it features puberty and periods, helping to normalise a completely normal part of growing up that is left out of 99.9% of films for kids. When Mei Lee turns into the red panda the only way for her to revert back to her human form is for her to control whatever strong emotion put her there in the first place: rage, panic or excitement.
The bright animations, colour and panda element ensure it’s a hit with kids – both small and not so small, whilst the female production and writing ensure it ticks all the boxes for us mums too.
We know what we’re up to on Friday evening…
