Kate Moss in her Glasto heyday, the Olsen twins, Alexa Chung… back in the 00s, all the coolest girls had a waistcoat in their wardrobe. Now, because seemingly we can’t get enough of wardrobe nostalgia, the waistcoat is back, and it’s absolutely bloody perfect for summer.
No longer just for City boys and DI Steve Arnott, the waistcoat has been gaining traction for a couple of seasons now, but it’s about to go mainstream thanks to Taylor Swift, who just wore a tailored one with matching wide-leg trousers (the way to style a waistcoat in 2022, FYI) to the Tribeca Film Festival.
Over on Insta, Cos’ beige tailored waistcoat is getting all the likes, but it’s a trend you can definitely tap into secondhand – a quick browse on eBay, Vinted and Depop revealed plenty of waistcoats just waiting to be snapped up.

Styling-wise, the options are plentiful; wear your waistcoat solo, over a tee or on top of a shirt for an homage to 00s Kate Moss. Like Tay-Tay, influencers are big fans of the waistcoat and wide-leg trouser combo, but it will also work with your favourite denim for a fresh take on “jeans and a nice top”.
